Award winning project Youth prevention project

Anti-smoking filmmaking project

Cut Films is a short peer-to-peer filmmaking project and competition which is part of the prevention arm of the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation. Working with schools and youth clubs across the country, Stacey Williams, Director of Attain Productions, has worked with over 4,000 young people in the last 4 years creating over 350 films. The short films have been shared online, presented at local and national awards ceremonies and have won awards on both local and national levels. 'Smoking Bullet' to the right was awarded the Overall Judges' Choice Award in 2015 and was created by a group of young people from Barnet with direction from Stacey.

Cut Films provided young people with a simple but effective brief: to create a short advert to convince their friends to not take up smoking. Whilst engaging with the brief, young people gain experience and training in all aspects of filmmaking, from storyboarding, script writing through to post-production.

The project has been adapted to work on various special projects from a Shisha Awareness Campaign in Barnet, to a passive smoking project in Southwark. Stacey has also led, designed and delivered an Erasmus+ funded project in partnership with organisations in Sweden and Slovenia.

This year Attain Productions will be delivering the Cut Films project across the Isle of Man.

Isle of Man

About the project

We are working with The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation to deliver their Cut Films Project on the Isle of Man from 2019 - 2020. The project has been kindly funded by the Isle of Man Anti-Cancer Association

We’re asking the young people of Isle of Man to enter our short film competition and help persuade their friends not to smoke.

We are offering support through free filmmaking and anti-tobacco workshops.

You can book anti-smoking workshops as one day sessions or over a longer period of time between 3-8 workshops of between 1-3 hours.

Our anti-smoking and filmmaking workshops link to PSHE and a range of subject including citizenship, media studies, English, ICT, drama, biology, chemistry and geography.

Free workshops

We offer free workshops & assemblies to schools and youth clubs based in Isle of Man to support and encourage entries into the Cut Films Project. Please get in touch below.

Shisha Awareness

In 2017 we designed and delivered shisha awareness workshops to over 3000 young people in Barnet. The project was designed for two phases, phase 1 was working with a small group of local young people to create an awareness film about shisha (seen above). The film was then screened in assemblies around the borough along with an interactive Truth/Myth game. The campaign was the first of its kind and brought to attention the dangers of shisha to young people all around Barnet.

EU Smokefree Youth Network

We will be delivering the EU Smokefree Youth Network 2.0 over 2019-2020 in conjunction with Team Oasis Liverpool, Young Preventers Sweden and X-Hale from the Irish Cancer Society.

In 2016 we designed, led, managed and delivered an international EU Smokefree Youth Network project. This project was composed of two parts: part 1 was a Youth Exchange in London where young people took part in demonstrations against British American Tobacco, presented to young people from around the country, interviewed MPs, created short films gaining filmmaking skills (storyboarding, scripting, camera, editing) and photography skills. Part 2 took place in Slovenia where young people furthered their filmmaking skills while gaining skills in debating and presenting. The project was done in collaboration with Smart Youth in Sweden and No Excuse in Slovenia.
